Whips and Brides
Last night we saw The Whipping Man at Curious Theatre; tomorrow we'll imbibe The Legend of Georgia McBride at the Denver Center. Both by Matthew Lopez. All we can say about The Whipping Man is "wow." Curious Theatre is famous for wow productions, and The Whipping Man met that expectation. But what were we expecting? We didn't know what to expect. Curious Theatre's description barely touches the tip of the iceberg: In the aftermath of the Civil War, a Jewish Confederate soldier returns home to discover two of his former slaves living in the ruins of his family’s once grand plantation. Bound together by faith, they reunite to celebrate Passover and confront their past, present and future. The Whipping Man is a hauntingly powerful drama about newfound freedom and the painful legacy of slavery. The Whipping Man tips the iceberg. Just go see it. Tell them, Pam Roth O'Mara, nice Jewish girl from Long Island, sent you.
