Julie Harris, an Influence

Image
Who has influenced you in a positive way that's stuck with you for a long, long time? Julie Harris, an actor, passed away this weekend at the age of 87. To me she wasn't just an actor, she was a huge influence. Back in the '60s, Ms. Harris made regular appearances funded by the Performing Arts Foundation (PAF) at the junior high school that I attended on Long Island, NY. I noticed her poise and wanted to be poised. I noticed her smile and wanted to have a smile like that. She spoke clearly and succinctly, and projected her voice and characters through the auditorium and into the lobby. And into my mind and sense of being. I wanted to do that too, I wanted to do that for others. Whether I did or not doesn't matter. She gave me the sense that I could - be poised and well spoken. And I still remember that, and carried it with me for 45 years. The Message:  Let's get and keep the arts and artists in our schools. Not the watered PC versions, the real thing, as writte...

Jimmy Carrane’s Point-On Improv Workshop

Image
It was a great workshop on honing improv skills. I was bit under the weather, my excuse for not being all there,  but the instructor was all-there and point-on with his observations and suggestions. I’m talking about the Slow Improv Workshop taught by Jimmy Carrane at Denver’s Voodoo Comedy Playhouse last Saturday morning 8/17. If you feel compelled to do improv, to be an improv player, to improvise on stage with people in the audience who want to see what you can manufacture out of thin air; then take a workshop with Jimmy Carrane. And get his book, read it through, and periodically pick it up and reread sections at random: Improvising Better: A Guide for the Working Improviser. Artist Lori Melena Successful at CHAC

Image
Congrats to artist Lori Melena in her current exhibit, “Prisoners of Art: In Jail, Need Bail." Check it out on Facebook:  www.facebook.com/lori.melena . We say, "You go, Girl!" The Exhibit:  All the artists are from Colorado and represent all mediums: oil, watercolor, acrylic and photography. Everyone has presented their art publicly and all but one has shown at CHAC. The name, “Prisoners of Art”, is a statement about how we all feel about art. It is an important part of our lives and we are “held captive” by the need to create. We believe that part of us can be seen in our art. It’s not the “tools” that make a great painting or photograph, but the eye and mind of the artist. When: through 8/31. Where: Chicano Humanities and Arts Council, 772 Santa Fe Dr, Denver Artists: Lori Melena, Judy Miranda, Tom Mares, Juanita Hernandez, and Lucille Ruibal-Rivera. Also showing works by Nancy Slyter, Jeremy Sawyer and Sonny Valdez in CHAC Norte. Questions? 303-571-044...
